Ensure Your Tax Refund Arrives Quickly and Securely

Posted in:

Tax season is approaching, and we know you’re looking forward to your refund. We want to help make sure it gets to you quickly and securely! The easiest way to receive your refund is through direct deposit, but there are a few important details to keep in mind. Using the correct routing number, choosing an eligible account and avoiding common mistakes can help prevent delays. Here’s what you need to know to keep the process smooth and stress-free.

Direct Deposit is Required

In September 2025, the IRS announced it will no longer issue paper refund checks; direct deposit is the fastest and safest way to receive your refund. It’s secure, convenient and helps avoid unnecessary delays.

Know Which Accounts are Eligible and Which Ones are Not

Not all accounts are eligible for tax refund direct deposits. To avoid delays, make sure you choose an account that meets IRS requirements.

Direct deposits must go into an eligible checking or savings account in your name. Certain accounts are not eligible, including:

  • An account that is not owned by the refund recipient
  • WUTMA (Wisconsin Uniform Transfers to Minors Act) accounts
  • Loan or credit accounts
  • Certificates of Deposits (CDs)
  • Business accounts for personal refunds
  • Prepaid cards or third-party payment apps
  • Dormant or restricted accounts

Important: Some savings accounts for individuals under age 21 are titled as WUTMA accounts. If you’re unsure how your child’s account is titled, please refer to the statement or check with your local banker. WUTMA accounts cannot accept tax refund deposits.

Use the Correct Routing Number for Your Tax Refund

Your routing number is essential for direct deposits. Using the wrong one can delay your refund or cause it to be returned.

NEBAT’s routing number is 075900766. (If you are a former NBW customer, please double check the routing number associated with all electronic payments.)

You’ll also need your account number when setting up a direct deposit with the IRS. If you don’t know your account number, you can find it on the bottom of your check or login to online or mobile banking and select the account you want. Tap “show details” in the upper right, then click the eye icon to reveal your full account number.

Tax season can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. If you have questions about setting up direct deposit, we’re here to help! Stop by your local office, give us a call or send us a secure message through online banking.
